Maybe this idea borders on sacrilege to you, but the first thought that went through my head when biting into the Maryland pupusa at La Brasita was this: It reminds me of crab pretzels, that balance-beam melding of Chesapeake Bay shellfish, salty stadium snack and carny food. My second thought: Why did it take so long for someone in the local Salvadoran community to invent a pupusa stuffed with blue crab, Old Bay and cheese?

The Fed is now open at the renovated Langham hotel, and there are bags of whoopie pies. Alas, the famous Cafe Fleuri chocolate buffet got swallowed up by the recent $150 million renovation at the historic Langham hotel in downtown Boston; the former Fleuri space is now a ballroom. Gone, too, is the hotel’s longtime restaurant Bond and a champagne lounge, the Reserve.

After more than a decade commanding Kyo Ya, one of New York’s most respected kaiseki kitchens, chef Chikara Sono — who earned one Michelin star and an enthusiastic three star New York Times review during his time there — has decamped to partner with longtime friend Makoto Suzuki (Brooklyn Ball Factory, Bozu, Samurai Mama). They will first open BBF in a 2,000-square-foot space, located at 177 Ludlow Street in the former home of Black Tap on the Lower East Side, and in an adjoining space, Kappo Sono will open at a later date.

These Jersey shore spots have salt air, seafood, and amazing views. The best kind of beach day ends with dinner and drinks outside — seated at a table on a roomy dock, deck, patio, sand bar, or rooftop at the type of restaurant with waterfront views that demand to be photographed.

Sexy Fish, meet the Sexy City. The globally famous seafood restaurant Sexy Fish London, from restaurateur Richard Caring and located in Berkeley Square, has announced plans for its first U.S. restaurant in Miami. Sexy Fish Miami is set to open in the Brickell neighborhood this fall with many of the original spot’s signature dishes, including such Japanese-inspired seafood as sushi and sashimi as well as fish and meat cooked on a Robata grill.

Solvang, California’s newest hotspot is Sear Steakhouse, a farm-driven Santa Ynez Valley restaurant venture from Demitri “Jimmy” and Karen Loizides. This full-service restaurant and bar is the third Santa Ynez Valley hospitality business for the couple whose behind K’Syrah Catering and Event and Maverick Saloon. The steakhouse is the second Santa Barbara wine country business for partner and general manager, Alberto Battaglini.

New Jerseyans know that great food can be found all over the state and, at times, in some of the least likely locations. Walking down an alleyway for great pizza, pulling over at a roadside hot dog joint and stepping into a tin can of a diner all can be destinations that reward those in the know. Sometimes these less fanciful foodie finds are situated right alongside what is arguably New Jersey’s greatest attraction —its 130 miles of coastline.
